Best Craft Beer Holidays – Brussels

If you’re unsure where Brussels is, then I’m guessing you’ve been under a rock somewhere recently. Not to worry, its good to have you back; there is lots to discuss. Firstly, we’ve got to talk about the most important thing about the city – beer – and we can offer you the chance to experience its wonder first hand in this months competition. Find out more below.

Brussels is notably the home of chocolate and bureaucracy (again we need to talk about that…) but lest we forget it sits as the capital of one of the traditional beer nations – Belgium. Awash with culture and beautiful architecture, sitting down and admiring it all with delicious pint is a must. As a go to beer city its not hard to wander it’s cobbled squares and streets and find a bar with the big hitting Belgian beers, but to have a properly memorable beer experience you have to know where to look and we’ve listed a few places we recommend that will help make this a trip never to forget.

Cantillon Brewery

The Cantillon Brewery is your first stop. Our FERMENT contributor, Mark Dredge describes it as a “musty, dusty inner city farmhouse with thousands of wooden barrels of sour beer slumbering away – its probably the most astonishing brewery you’ll ever visit.”

There is more to offer than one of the worlds most fantastic breweries. It’s gueuze is known as the champagne of Belgium and accounts for 50% of the breweries output; you have to try some before you leave.

For the best range of draft beers the capital has to offer then a trip to one of the Moeder Lambic bars is necessary. You’re spoilt for choice so ask the bar staff for their top picks or plump for Brasserie de la Senne or Jandrain-Jandrenouille, always a gorgeous choice.

Good beer is nothing without good food and you can grab some great beer bites at Restobieres or Nuetnigenough to balance out your day.

08-POECHENELLEKELDER-2015
Poechenellekelder

With plenty to see and do in Brussels its always good to hit two birds with one stone. The Poechenellekelder and its roof bedecked in puppets is certainly a quirky establishment on the tourist route, but you can sit outside with a great beer and watch the Mannekin Pis. Hopefully it doesn’t put you off too much.
